Initiated in 2006 by the Barcelona Design Centre, the Barcelona Design Week (BDW) serves as the city's annual hub for design and creativity. In its 18th year, coinciding with a symbolic “coming of age” celebration, the 2023 edition aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) declared by the United Nations.
Barcelona-based visual communication studio LEÓN ROMERO created the identity and communication campaign, centred on introducing a new sustainable development goal, SDG number 18: Design for Human Future.

Pioneering as the first design week to propose an SDG on design, the BDW underlines the pivotal role of design in shaping a human-centric future. As a member of the World Design Weeks network, BDW collaborates with nearly 40 design festivals worldwide.
The goal of SDG 18 is to promote a more human and humanistic future by integrating design tools, practices, and culture into companies, associations, and individuals to generate a positive global impact. LEÓN ROMERO sought an iconic, transgressive, and dynamic representation of the number 18 to visually represent this concept, linking it to the proposed sustainable development goal. The studio used generative language tools, not artificial intelligence, to achieve these results, infusing the design with a technological connotation while maintaining an organic essence, evoking the more human aspects of publishing. The result includes a diverse range of artworks based on the number 18, employing different treatments to visually communicate the balance between technology and humanism in a recognisable and iconic manner.
